Update your space with cushions
One of the reasons I was inspired to set up an online shop, specialising in accessories is that often the cheapest and easiest way to add wow factor to a space is by simply swopping the accessories.
Cushions are the default accessory. Use them to add accent colour and pattern into a scheme. Plain coloured cushions in luxurious fabrics will lift a monochrome scheme. You don’t have to go overboard as three or four scatter cushions on a sofa will be sufficient : remember not to overdo it and leave a place to sit.
It is really important to break up an expanse of solid colour, especially if you have a big dark sofa.
Mix solid and patterned cushions and make sure you pick up colours in the room to achieve a layered, comfortable look. Don’t be afraid to mix patterns either– the trick is to choose from the same colour palette, using two or three colours so that the effect isn’t overwhelming and don’t overdo it. Use the other existing colours in the room to guide you.
Olivia Berrys silk cushions, inspired by the neon lights of Soho, feature subtly different patterns in a similiar palette so would go well together on a dark grey or taupe sofa.
Florals will update a plain sofa and add a touch of Summer to your living room. These ones from Occipinti are quintessentially English.
Colour blocking is so on-trend this year and no-one does it better than Nick Terry, with his range of vibrant, geometric, maze-patterned cushions. One or two of these cushions will inject personality into a neutral colour scheme. Or use his matching wallpaper to create a stunning feature wall.
Add other accessories in the same vivid hues –art, throws, a rug, etc.
Woodland motifs have been popular in interiors for a while now and show no sign of waning. Woodland motifs are a strong catwalk trend for Autumn/Winter 14, as shown in the Valentino show at Paris Fashion Week, and where the catwalk leads, interiors are sure to follow. Print designer Lisa Bliss incorporates wildlife into her stunning designs, shown here in her stag and fox themed prints, to add a touch of country house hotel style. Accessorise with a leather chair and a roaring fire!
And the beauty of buying cushions online is that you can see easily see if the existing colours in your room are picked up in the cushions.
